Saturday Night: The Polaroid Retrospective II

The Polaroid Retrospective IIContinuing its evolution, “The Polaroid Retrospective” returns on Saturday night at the Lamont Bishop Gallery with all new work from over two dozen photographers. In an attempt to outdo my previous work from the original exhibition in January, one piece I submitted for this show is a 5′ wide collage with nearly 100 prints, both color and black-and-white, using 3.25″ x 4.25″ Fuji instant film shot with a Polaroid back on a Mamiya medium format camera. And yes, it’s a nude.

Opening Reception:
Saturday April 9th from 7-11pm
Lamont Bishop Gallery
1314 9th Street NW
Washington, DC

Who is Jason Wu?

Our answer: a charming and soft spoken artist dedicated to his craft. And feathers.

WORN: In a sense, you’re no stranger to the DC area: you’ve worked with a doll manufacturer in Maryland and then, of course, there was the inaugural gown. Does DC hold any special significance for you?

JWU: I always find DC to be such a calm and peaceful place, and so beautiful. I’m unfortunately only here for one day, but earlier today I was able to drop by the Corcoran Gallery. And I always find that there’s always a great exhibit there. The monuments are a natural inspiration. And I always love coming into Union Station, because I feel like there is an old-world glamour about Union Station that is pretty much lost these days.

WORN: This is a city that’s very much about power. Yes The designers you cite as influences, like Charles James, designed for women who had a very different type of power in mid-century America. How do you balance designing for women who want to look feminine, but might also be running a company or addressing the United Nations?

LOVE in Dupont Circle

LOVE 2788 - Joshua Yospyn

Today in Dupont Circle a mysterious “LOVE” piece went up around the fountain.  Rumors on Twitter imply this has something to do with the Cherry Blossom Festival, whose parade is coming up on April 9th.  Do you know anything about this mysterious sculpture?  Is it yours?  Leave us a comment.  We’re pretty sure it’s not Robert Indiana but I’m waiting for Groover Cleveland to return my call.

PS – check the comments, we’re getting some answers.

Interview with Dr. Martin Irvine

Martin Irvine 12

Irvine Contemporary Proprietor and Director Dr. Martin Irvine is very fond of his 2007 Yamaha V Star. While it’s a beautiful machine, I profess ignorance–two hours of road time on a Vespa (mostly on the back seat) doesn’t qualify me to discuss motorcycles.  So instead we talked photography.  And Andy Warhol, whose likeness, along with icons like Madonna and Michael Jackson, is the subject of several photographs in the gallery’s current exhibition Image/Fame/Memory, running through April 16.  (I’m trying to find a TV commercial Warhol did for a candy and chocolate company called Schrafft’s in the late 1960s and, although Martin wasn’t aware of it, he told me how the artist painted Debbie Harry on a Commodore Amiga computer in 1985.)

After I took a portrait for the blog, I asked Martin to answer a few questions about his gallery’s current exhibition and photography in general. His replies are insightful — a window into the Georgetown University graduate program in Communication, Culture, and Technology (CCT), of which he’s Founding Director and Associate Professor.

Ivanka Trump Talks Shoes

Ivanka Trump at Tysons Mall 2323

She’s a published author, tv personality, Executive Vice President at Trump, and, of course, has her own jewelry, handbag, and shoe lines. She’s even hosted the Miss Teen USA pageant. There’s pretty much nothing Ivanka Trump hasn’t done. We chatted with the six month pregnant tour de force yesterday at the Nordstrom celebration of her shoe line. What we found: a surprisingly down to earth working girl who loves a good DC brunch and, we suspect, even had a jumbo slice or two in her Georgetown days.

Bill Cunningham New York … in DC

On Thursday March 10 at 8pm the Hirshhorn is screening Bill Cunningham New York, the first feature film by Richard Press.  Why do we love Bill Cunningham?  As Tracy Clayton tells us, “Because he rocks the blue smock better then Mr. Rogers did cardigans.”  Or as Erica Wissolik says, “It’s not about the personality behind the clothes…its about the clothes themselves. He has no use for pretense. He simply loves the display of stylish clothing. He loves the fashion.”  As for myself, I can’t help but admire someone who’s been photographing on the NYC street for decades.

Before Thursday night, you can also enter the museum’s contest to win a new bike:

In the spirit of the Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist and to celebrate this exciting sneak peek screening, the Hirshhorn is giving away a Schwinn cruiser. All you have to do is follow @hirshhorn and @RideSchwinn and retweet the contest message for your chance to win a Schwinn Coffee (or Cream) 3-speed. Full contest rules are here. A random retweeter will be selected to win after contest ends on 3/8.

Whoever wins the bike will be in good shape for the next tweed or seersucker ride.

Uncle Cory Needs YOU

Cory Oberndorfer 10-11

Our friend and local artist Cory Oberndorfer was recently stripped of some valuable equipment and we’re asking readers to support its replacement.  As he recounted, “I’ve lived in Washington, DC  for over four years now, and a few months ago I learned the downside of living in an urban area: I got mugged. I walked away unscathed, but I was robbed of my digital projector as I was picking it up from a friend. The projector is a vital piece of equipment for my practice, as it helps me hold consistency in my designs when I work larger.”
