A Pleasant Temporium for Nana

Jackie Flanagan is courageous. She opened a women’s clothing boutique called Nana’s on the U Street Corridor way before anyone decided it was cool, or even safe to go there, much less shop there. Eight years and many loyal customers later, she’s moved her shop to Mt. Pleasant to be part of a new emerging neighborhood that many of us have already discovered for its mariachi nights and dive bars. A couple of weeks ago she hosted a clothing swap at her new location at 3068 Mt. Pleasant St, and this weekend the space will host the newest incarnation of the Temporium. Supported by the D.C. Office of Planning, the Temporium is a temporary pop-up space that exists to give local artists and designers the chance to showcase and sell their work. The theme this year is storytelling, and the grand opening is this Friday from 7-9pm.

We’ve been keeping track of Jackie’s journey from U Street to Mt. Pleasant on her blog, where over the holidays she had the nerve to say what few shop owners ever dare to admit: Being a small business owner in D.C. is really hard for a variety of reasons not limited to weather, government fees, and the challenges of the economy. Shopping local is one of the best things you can do to help to the fashion and art community thrive. Stop in to Nana’s new location in Mt. Pleasant at the end of this month, pick up a copy of Worn Magazine’s latest issue, and shop vintage, unique designs, and locally made jewelry by Nana’s very own Daisy McClellan.
