Friday Night Art

Whether you’ve got tickets for the Halloween party at the National Zoo, Hirshhorn After Hours (today’s photos are from the last After Hours in July) or plan on checking out what appears to be a massive photography opening at Civilian, you can’t miss the Cult of Frank Van Riper’s bonanza exhibition. CULT takes place tonight from 6:30pm – 11pm at a relatively new penthouse-like artspace atop Social in Columbia Heights (14th and Meridian). Entrance is $10 with music by DJs Adrian Loving and Soul Call Paul, designer cocktails by Jake Worth of Marvin, and festive face painting by make-up artist Seema Khanna. I’ll have two prints hanging on the wall alongside images from 17 other Cult members, many of whom use that ancient medium known as “film.” From their press office:
“The Cult began in 2007, after a few students in one of Frank Van Riper‘s Glen Echo classes bonded over beer and bromides, otherwise known as ‘Suds and Silver,’ in reference to the chemistry of black-and-white photography. Membership in the Cult is not restricted to Van Riper’s students, although you must be knighted by him or his wife Judy in order to join. Once a member, you are privy to a wealth of photographic knowledge that should be protected, practiced and preached to all those who will listen. The Cult has a reputation across the DC area for outstanding work that reflects high ethical standards and a willingness to challenge convention.”
Happy Halloween everybody, hope to see you tonight. Look for the chicken.
