Worn Out: The Maneating Flower
Posted by Joshua Yospyn | May 26, 2010
We’re on a major arts kick here and on Sunday I visited Handmade Mart in Silver Spring, which is organized by the same team that assembles Crafty Bastards every fall in Adams Morgan. After photographing a pirate near the entrance, I checked out the booth of Baltimore artist Ned Drummond, also known as Maneating Flower. Ned was selling a collection of custom-printed, leather-bound flasks, which you can purchase off Etsy. One flask in particular got the attention of my moustache-obsessed friend. (Handlebars anyone?) But Ned got the attention of my camera with her unique look, flower pin and use of feathers (also a running theme on the Worn Magazine blog).
After visiting her website, I learned Ned has multiple artistic talents, including printmaking, graphic design, plus she made a narwhal pouch from a recycled leather coat. If Buddhists are correct and we’re reborn thousands of times over, what karma path do we take to become a narwhal? Have I already been one? Anyway, enjoy this portrait of Ned while I write the Dalai Lama for instruction.
