American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center

Katzen Arts Center - SmallSaturday was the start of One Hour Photo but it also kicked off an early summer exhibition in the American University Museum.  This was my first trip to the Katzen Arts Center and it felt like a smaller version of the Whitney Museum.  Visitors work their way floor-by-floor through mixed media, paintings, graffiti, video installations, photography and sculpture by either experienced artists or MFA students (it’s often hard to tell the difference and I mean that in a good way).  Plus the museum is built to accomodate giant-scale work, as you’ll see below.

Make sure to click into the entire post to see more and leave a comment if you can provide more information about the artist(s).  Many thanks to Allison Peck at the American University Museum for helping me identify and detail all the work in these images (I added more images Tuesday night after getting the appropriate captions).

I also met Dan VanHoozer, who for the last 10 months has been behind all the free PBR you drink at art events around the the DC metro area.  I told Dan that PBR is becoming omnipresent across the city.  It’s the art beer.  In that case, he says, “I’m doing my job.”  I have to give a nod to Dan for all the free brew I’ve drank over the past year.  Follow him on twitter or the PBR blog.  Katzen Arts Center 1053

Finally, a close up of Lisa Schumaier’s “March to War (detail), 2007. Paper mache, found objects. 35″ x 16″ x 25″.”  Love the Buck Fush.
