Living in the District of Chic

Posted by Joshua Yospyn | April 28, 2010

Continuing our exploration of local fashion bloggers, we discovered the District of Chic.  Who, just like Bug, has a combination of energy and style to surprise us almost every day with something new (Chic has been running a blog for two years).  I photographed her in a few locations, but this storefront in Cleveland Park stood out for obvious reasons.

I asked about the jacket:

The jacket is stolen from my mom’s closet.  It was covered in dust and paired with some heinous bright pink top.  It’s Nolan Miller, quite possibly circa the Dynasty era, maybe newer, I’m not sure, but the insane shoulder pads and angular folds were what drew me to it.

About her shoes, she writes on her blog:

I remember wanting a pair of t-straps when I was in junior high and never finding the right pair.  The dream soon faded and I moved on, until the day I saw these babies.  That early infatuation was rekindled in my heart when I saw that lovely pointy toe again, and then the wonderful pink satin draping in the back appealed to the older, wiser me.  Ah young love, is there anything like it?

Read and see more on districtofchic.com.  Many thanks to our new friend for letting us take her portrait.

For you camera nerds, the above image is Fuji FP-100c instant film after two minutes of cooking.  Then below is a 6×7 medium format film scan of Kodak Portra 400VC.  I’m not averse to digital, but I often use film for portraiture.  Questions?  Thoughts?  Leave a comment.
